“El puto amo”
Reggaeton is not really my thing, I must confess. I’m from another generation. What I do have to recognise, however, is that Bad Bunny (Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio, 1994) is the top man for generation Z. A poet with an endless list of international fans.
He showed up on the music scene quite recently and has had only a short career. He released his first songs in 2016, and now has more than 665 million views on YouTube with his latest songs (“Estamos bien”, “Caro”, or “Tú no metes Cabra”). Last year he was the third most viewed artist on YouTube and took part in SONAR 2019, a huge concert. He has worked with some of the biggest reggaeton stars, such as Ozuna or Nicky Jam. This Puerto Rican singer has broken all the rules in Latin urban music and has become a huge star, filling stadiums with millennials and Trap and Beats rhythms.
Bad Bunny was born in Puerto Rico and wanted to be a musician ever since he was 5. He worked stacking shelves in a supermarket in his home city until he began to release his first songs as an independent artist. He left his visual communication studies at UPRA (University of Puerto Rico de Areceibo) to become a singer.
His lyrics are full of intellectual poetry and carry a clear message which is quite different from his peers. His first album “X100 pre”, released in 2018 saw him acknowledged as one of the best Latin musicians according to Billboard and led to numerous international awards.
Is he or is he not the top man?
